Discord brings back old-school message boards to help organize messy channels

What was old is now new again: social messaging platform Discord is adding a feature very similar to classic internet forums; the aptly named Forum Channels.

Discord functions as a free range chat room; people enter a channel to talk about whatever they want with some moderation involved to keep things on topic. But the tricky thing about this style of chatting is it can be pretty tough to hop into a conservation because you have no idea where to start. The feed wizzes by you in a disorganized mess.

Now with Forum Channels, Discord is trying to reign in that clutter by providing specialized channels about a specific topic. The feature appears as a list of large, box posts that have a bolded title for its topic. Click on one and you will be taken to that chat room where the comments are posted in a chronological order. Anybody can create these rooms, but only server administrators can create the Forum Channels themselves.

It’s basically like old-school forums. And it’s a little ironic that Discord is adding forums when it effectively replaced that way of online communication.

Setting up

Discord states the feature is currently rolling out to both the desktop and mobile app, so if you’re interested in creating one for your server, be sure to install the update when it arrives. It'll roll out in waves over time. The company has a set of instructions on how to create Forum Channels on its website. The gist of it is you first create a new channel, select the Forum option, create some guidelines, set permissions for users, and you’re good to go.

The feature also comes with a search bar if you can’t find what you’re searching for and it supports AutoMod. One of the problems with old-school forums is moderation. Forums can get out of hand as people go off topic and create posts hundreds of pages long with all sorts of content on there. AutoMod is a moderation tool that automatically cleans up Discord channels. As an example, you can configure the tool to zero in on derogatory words or off-topic discussions and block people who violate the rules.

Discord’s API Documentation has also been updated to include information on Forums Channels for anybody who wants to create bots for their channel.

Recent moderation tools

When it first launched, Discord was seen as an alternative to online forums where you and your friends can have a private chat room. It’s been widely adopted by gaming communities as a way for fans to congregate around their favorite titles. But as time went on, Discord grew into gargantuan proportions so features have steadily been added to help manage the platform.

Besides the aforementioned AutoMod, Discord has recently seen the introduction of text chats in voice channels allowing users to paste links, add reaction GIFs, or enter a message. The aim of this update, according to Discord, was to move discussions away from the main channel by helping keep it clear of clutter. Plus, the platform recently expanded its Nitro offerings to include a basic plan that increases file upload size among other tools.

Android 12 will bring the end of third-party share menus

Apps like Sharedr will no longer be able to replace the default share dialog. What you need to know Third-party apps will not be allowed to replace the Android share menu in Android 12. You will no longer be able to set apps like Sharedr as the default. Google says it never intended to allow third-party apps to replace the official Sharesheet. One of Android 12 's biggest highlights is the new Material You design language, which brings major changes to nearly every key UI component. Android 12 will also introduce a major change to the way users share links and photos, according to a report from XDA Developers . On Android 11 , Google allows third-party apps and OEMs to fully customize the Android Sharesheet, which is the reason why the share dialog differs from one app to another. It is even possible to completely bypass the official Android Sharesheet by setting an app like Sharedr as the default Sharesheet. In addition to providing a more consistent experience, Sharedr

The new Amazon Fire HD 10 is growing into a viable productivity tablet

An already good entertainment device finally gets productive. Amazon has been busy churning out a whole host of new devices and upgrades to existing devices over the past several months. Earlier this year, I reviewed the excellent Echo Buds (2nd Gen) , and even the fantastic Echo Frames (2nd Gen), have since been updated to include options with sunglass and blue light filtering lenses . In early May, we also learned that Amazon was refreshing the Echo Show 5 and Echo Show 8 and that it was even rolling out its first Echo Show for kids . While newer and more novel products like the ones mentioned above often see a faster update cycle, more mature devices like Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets go longer between new versions. In fact, the last update to the Fire HD 10 line was back in 2019, so, understandably, Amazon was ready to reinvigorate its flagship tablet. Not only did it update the specs and colors on the Fire HD 10, but it also gave us a second version in the Fire HD 10 Plu

Google Announces Support for Account Passkeys

Google today announced that it is introducing support for passkeys, providing an easier and more secure login method for Google accounts. Apple integrated passkeys into iOS with the launch of iOS 16 , and it is also available in iPadOS 16.1 and later as well as macOS Ventura . Passkeys are an industry standard developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, so Google's passkey integration will work on Apple devices as well as on other devices that support the feature. As Google notes: Last year — alongside FIDO Alliance, Apple and Microsoft — we announced we would begin work to support passkeys on our platform as an easier and more secure alternative to passwords. And today, ahead of World Password Day, we've begun rolling out support for passkeys across Google Accounts on all major platforms. They'll be an additional option that people can use to sign in, alongside passwords, 2-Step Verification (2SV), etc. Passkeys are both easier to use and more
