BOE reveals 600Hz laptop display, and we’re sick of this refresh rate nonsense

BOE (Beijing Oriental Electronics) has revealed a new display with the fastest ever refresh rate seen, a mind-boggling 600Hz to be precise. The screen in question is actually a laptop display, a 16-inch LCD that the Chinese site IT Home brought to our attention (via Tom’s Hardware ). The panel was shown off at the World Conference on Display Industry in China, but besides the size and refresh rate, no other specs were provided for the screen, although it was demonstrated at the event. BOE showed off the display in a laptop with an AMD Ryzen CPU and Nvidia GPU – presumably, or at least those logos were on the chassis of the notebook, so it’d be very odd if the stickered components weren’t inside the portable. The 600Hz screen seems like it’s still in the earlier stages of development, mind you, because while functioning, the display was attached to the laptop base using tape, apparently. Analysis: Is this really a case of “stop that, it’s silly” Does the world really need a 60

Indiana Jones 5 trailer goes back to the series' roots – and I couldn't be happier

The first trailer for Indiana Jones 5 has landed online – and, thankfully, it looks like a welcome throwback to the movie series' iconic roots. Released publicly on December 1 after being shown at Brazil Comic-Con, the film's teaser suggests it's leaning heavily towards classic Indy adventures (such as The Temple of Doom) rather than the maligned Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. And that's before we get onto the stunning de-aging technology used to make Harrison Ford's legendary archaeologist look like a young man again. Check out the first trailer for the film – full title Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny – below: Impressed and excited? You should be. Indiana Jones 5 has the look and feel of the fan-favorite 80s film franchise down to a tee, and it's certainly galvanized my interest in the forthcoming movie. What's so special about it? For one, that de-aging technology we mentioned earlier.  Disney and Lucasfilm's attempts at recreating icon

I won't have to drown any more horses, thanks to the new Minecraft update

It’s finally here: the Minecraft update 1.19.50 has arrived, and it brings plenty of camel goodness and other great surprises.  This update was promised to us back in October during Minecraft Live. We got the pleasure of seeing lead designers and spokespeople for Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons – Agnes Larsson, and Jens Bergensten – discuss their plans for the following year’s new content.  Front and center was the update 1.19.50, which promised a new tone to the blocky adventure game. This time, however, instead of one coherent theme like those we’ve seen in previous years (including the cave update or the nature update), this update would be themeless.  Instead of a restrictive structure, the team over at Mojang would add elements that they wanted to see in the game regardless of whether they fit together. That’s why the new auditions of bamboo blocks, interactive bookshelves, and camels may not seem cohesive – at least, not at first.  (Image credit: Mojang/Microsoft)

The Xiaomi 13 launch delayed but new teasers and leaks reveal all

The Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro were supposed to be getting unveiled today (December 1), but in a last-minute announcement, the company has now delayed the launch. The reason for the delay wasn’t given, with the news – posted on Weibo and spotted by NotebookCheck – simply reading “We regret to inform you that the launch of the new Mi 13 series will be postponed. We will notify you as soon as the new release date is confirmed. Thank you for your understanding and support.” However, it’s been speculated that the delay is to honor former Chinese president Jiang Zemin, who just passed away. The big question is when the launch will now happen; with this post providing no hint at a new date. However, assuming the delay is for the reason above, we can;'t imagine it'll hold things up for too long, so there’s a high chance the Xiaomi 13 series will still be unveiled before the end of the year. In the meantime, a major new leak has emerged, along with some teasers from Xiaomi

Starfield lead Todd Howard is feeling the pressure to be Xbox Series X "platform seller"

Microsoft has been on a studio-buying mission for the past three years, scooping up Obsidian and Ninja Theory. Besides Activision Blizzard, the biggest of all has been Bethesda, the studio behind Fallout, Skyrim, and the upcoming intergalactic RPG Starfield.  Studio head Todd Howard admits that he’s feeling the “pressure” to make their sci-fi RPG a “platform seller” for Microsoft’s Xbox Series X - and honestly, after all these acquisitions, Microsoft’s studios need to start delivering attractive exclusives for the console. “We’ve never been kind of the platform seller, you know ‘, the game’ for a platform for some time, and so, there is a lot of pressure [and] a lot of responsibility there to make sure we deliver for everybody,” Howard said in the Lex Fridman podcast (via VGC ). Adding to the pressure, the deliberately lonesome Starfield won’t launch on Sony consoles, but Todd Howard said, “this is not abnormal in any way”.  “Keep in mind that for us, that exclusivity is not un

Windows 11 making you wait ages for files to copy? There’s a fix for that

Windows 11 users who have run into a problem whereby they’re finding that large files are copying really slowly will be pleased to hear that Microsoft has now fixed the issue. This issue affects Windows 11 22H2, and note that the fix is in place in the freshly released preview build 25252. So in other words, those testing the OS now have access to the fix, to run it through its paces and ensure all is working correctly. Naturally, it will come through to the release version of Windows 11 eventually. As Bleeping Computer reports, Ned Pyle, who is Microsoft’s principal program manager in the Windows Server engineering group, informed us: “The final fix for Windows 11 22H2 production computer will come in a normal monthly Cumulative Update through Windows Update once validated in Insider builds.” Performance being considerably reduced when copying larger files – which simply means they’ll take a lot longer to copy over than they should, and going by some reports, they might take twi

Apple M2 Max leaked benchmark gets us excited for MacBook Pros in 2023

Apple’s M2 Max chip, which will succeed the current M1 Max , has been spotted in leaked benchmarks giving us an idea of how much faster the next-gen variant might be. As Wccftech reports, this comes in the form of Geekbench results picked up by Benchleaks on Twitter, which as always with leaks, we should be suitably cautious around. Apple M2 Maxhttps://t.co/aXcjUIB9bGhttps://t.co/8whb0JpWOI November 30, 2022 See more In Geekbench, the M2 Max racked up a tally of 1,889 points for single-core, and in multi-core pushed ahead to 14,586. Comparing that to the current M1 Max, which hits about 1,750 and 12,200 respectively, meaning that the M2 Max is shaping up to be around 8% quicker for single-core, and 20% more speedy in terms of multi-core performance. Analysis: A tidy potential performance boost It should be no real surprise that the M2 Max takes apparent further strides forward with multi-core performance, given that this chip runs with 12-cores (as shown in the Geekbench

December's PS Plus Essential lineup has leaked – and it includes this top RPG trilogy

Fans of action RPGs might have another reason to celebrate this holiday season as, according to a recent leak, PlayStation Plus's free games lineup for December includes the acclaimed Mass Effect trilogy. The leak comes via French netizen billbil-kun, of business tips forum Dealabs , who has previously accurately leaked PlayStation Plus Essential free games on numerous occasions. If their information stands true, we can expect Biomutant and Divine Knockout to accompany the complete remastered trilogy of Mass Effect (available now as Mass Effect Legendary Edition ) when the PS Plus free games for December land on December 6. A Christmas miracle? (Image credit: EA) While it’s an exciting prospect that Ps Plus subscribers might get their hands on a free copy of one of the most highly-regarded action RPGs of the last two decades, you’d be wise to approach this news with caution until an official announcement is made by Sony. However, there are many reasons to be cautiou

Samsung Galaxy S23 could land in early February with an extremely high price

There’s probably not long to wait now until the Samsung Galaxy S23 series launches, with these phones expected to land in early 2023, and more specifically they might land in February. That’s according to “a Samsung Electronics executive with knowledge of the matter,” speaking to the Korea JoongAng Daily , in a report spotted by The Verge . They reportedly claimed that “the S23 series will be shown during our own Unpacked event in the United States, which will be held in February,” and while they didn’t get more specific than that, the site cited local media outlets as saying that the Galaxy S23 line will be unveiled in San Francisco in the first week of February. So the Samsung Galaxy S23 – along with the Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra – might only be around two months away, at the time of writing if this is accurate, but they might also be very expensive. These are high-end handsets, so they’re never cheap, but the Korea JoongAng Daily additionally claims that the Galaxy

Today could be the most fraudulent day of the year

Today could be the most fraudulent day of the year, according to the cybersecurity startup SEON.  Following hot on the heels of Black Friday is Cyber Monday - the day when retailers encourage consumers to shop online, rather than in the store. Since its inception, Cyber Monday has become just as important for the retail industry as its forebear, and one that cybercriminals equally seek to take advantage of - perhaps more so.  Fraud attempts on Cyber Monday far exceed fraud attempts on a “regular” Monday, but this year we could be looking at a record-breaker. In its latest report, SEON predicted a 100% increase in fraud attempts on Cyber Monday, making it a much bigger threat than Black Friday, for which the company anticipated a 57% increase. Bot programs and fake profiles The company bases these claims on proprietary data. Apparently, it processed 26% more transactions on Black Friday, compared to a “normal” Friday, and saw a 57% increase in declined transaction rates.  In contr

Open-source security really shouldn't be this leaky

As businesses become increasingly reliant on free and open source (FOSS) software, unnecessary risks to their security posture are being taken.  That's according to the latest report from software supply chain security firm Sonatype, which paints a dire picture of the types of open-source software that businesses are relying on, perhaps as a means to cut software costs . As per the company's State of the Software Supply Chain Report, now in its eighth year, developers download 1.2 billion vulnerable dependencies every month, and of that number, 96% have had a non-vulnerable alternative. A surge in OSS supply chain attacks Attacking open-source repositories that are later downloaded and integrated into corporate software is a clear example of a supply chain cyberattack.  With some 1,500 dependency changes per application every year, maintaining open-source ecosystems puts a great deal of pressure on developers, and mistakes are always going to be made. Perhaps as a resu

If you're hankering after a set of Sony's excellent WH-1000XM4 over-ear wireless noise-cancellers this Cyber Monday , you're not alone – it's one of the most searched for products of the season. And we're here for it. We have to tell you that briefly (oh, so briefly!) yesterday, they did drop to $193 at Amazon... but that fleeting and euphoric moment passed in the blink of an eye.  However, they can still be found for $228 in blue, at Amazon, and also via a couple of other online retailers, including in both black and silver at Crutchfield (a deal which ends today) and in all colorways (black, blue and silver) for that $228 low price at Best Buy .  In the UK, the best deal is £219 at Amazon (from £350) – although again, we have to tell you that they have in the past dipped to £201.99 (September last year, to be precise) and we haven't seen that this year… We're unlikely to, though – thanks inflation.  US: The best Sony WH-1000XM4 deal Sony

Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti GPU could arrive soon – but at what cost?

Nvidia’s RTX 4070 Ti has been spotted in an online filing of multiple models from Gigabyte, indicating that we might see the graphics card released soon enough, as previous rumors have suggested. Gigabyte filed the various RTX 4070 Ti models with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), as flagged up by @harukaze5719, a regular leaker on Twitter (via VideoCardz ), and this typically happens not long before products are launched. The Huawei Mate X3 should be arriving soon to take on the Z Fold 4

If you're keen on foldable phones but aren't fully convinced by the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 , then there should soon be another of these innovative devices available to buy: the Huawei Mate X3 is apparently now ready for mass production and should show up soon. That's according to tipster Wangzai Knows Everything (via Notebookcheck ), and the word is that it will follow the design aesthetic laid down by Samsung quite closely – as well as potentially cost significantly less than its rival. There may be some compromises along the way, with rumors that the handset will have to make do with 4G rather than 5G. It should come running the latest high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor though. What we know so far We don't actually know much at all about what the Huawei Mate X3 is going to bring with it, though some clues might be offered up by what we've previously seen on the Huawei Mate X2 , which made its debut in February 2021. That's nearly two years

Intel’s faster Raptor Lake flagship CPU spotted at retailer – and it looks pricey

Intel’s incoming Core i9-13900KS, which will be a new version of the Raptor Lake flagship CPU – one capable of boost to 6GHz right out of the box , no overclocking needed – could be over 20% more expensive than the current 13900K. As VideoCardz highlighted, this is going by a tweet from hardware leaker @momomo_us who picked up on the 13900KS – and other inbound Raptor Lake processors – being listed at retailer PC Canada (keep your skeptical head firmly on, naturally). 🤔 https://t.co/iglVxe5zQm pic.twitter.com/wjZofzLaF7 November 26, 2022 See more The 13900KS is priced at $927 Canadian Dollars, and comparing that to the price of the existing 13900K at the same retailer, that’s a 22% markup. A bunch of other Raptor Lake processors are listed and priced here, models which have already been leaked previously ( by Microsoft in fact ). They include the Core i3-13100 at the other end of the spectrum from the 13900KS, a quad-core processor marked up at $207 Canadian Dollars (or
