iOS 16 leak hints at which older iPhones Apple might ditch

Older iPhones only get new iOS updates for a certain amount of time before Apple decides to put them out to sea, and a report has suggested which devices could sail out into the sunset when iOS 16 launches later this year. This comes from a site called iDropNews , in a report written by a leaker called AppleLeaksPro with a limited track record. Take the information with a pinch of salt, due to the source, but what's stated does make sense given Apple's habits. Apparently, iOS 16 won't be compatible with three iPhones that did receive iOS 15: those are the iPhone 6s , iPhone 6S Plus and the original iPhone SE. These devices are from 2015, 2015 and 2016 respectively so they are pretty old. Apple drops support for older iPhones with new builds of iOS because the older hardware simply doesn't have the power or space for the newer operating system, and it's something that happens in the Android space too. That's not to say Apple will completely forget about the

Asus’ new portable monitor looks like it was ripped from a Duo laptop

The PA147CDV next to one of Asus’ laptops. | Image: Asus The Asus ProArt Display PA147CDV is a 14-inch touchscreen that’s designed to act as a secondary display for creatives. With its small form-factor and ultrawide 32:9 aspect ratio it looks as though Asus has ripped the secondary display off one of its Duo laptops and turned it into an external monitor. The PA147CDV was technically announced last September , but Asus is currently showing it off at the NAB 2022 show in Las Vegas and is announcing plans to release the monitor in Q2 2022 in North America at a price that’s yet to be announced. With its support for Microsoft’s Pen Protocol 2.0, and a built in dial that’s designed to emulate the functionality of Microsoft’s Surface Dial , Asus is pitching the PA147CDV as an accessory for creatives looking for a little extra screen real-estate without investing in a bulky second monitor or touchscreen tablet . Hopefully it’ll be priced less than competing displays with larger scree

Workers at Nintendo’s third-party repair partner were reportedly overwhelmed with Joy-Con repairs

Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Workers at Nintendo’s third-party repair facility reportedly faced a “very stressful” work environment caused by a deluge of Switches sent in for issues related to Joy-Con drift, according to a report from Kotaku . A former supervisor at the New York-based United Radio, the company that partners with Nintendo to repair broken devices, told Kotaku that the large volume of Joy-Con repairs resulted in a high turnover rate and “lots of” mistakes. United Radio is its own company — Nintendo merely acts as the middleman, handling customer communications and leaving the repairing to United Radio, which serves Nintendo customers located in the eastern half of the US. The ubiquity of Joy-Con drift led to “easily thousands” of Joy-Cons that passed through United Radio in a single week, and prompted the company to set up a workstation dedicated to Joy-Con repair, the former supervisor told Kotaku . Joy-Con drift is a widespread issue that causes the contro

Don't expect a battery boost on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

New leaks around the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 are appearing with increasing regularity as we approach the foldable phone's expected August launch window, and the latest one concerns one of the most important specs of all: battery capacity. The team at GalaxyClub has spotted two phone batteries being registered by Samsung with regulators in South Korea, and all the signs suggest that these batteries are going to be heading to the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 . We've got rated capacities of 2,002mAh and 2,268mAh, a grand total of 4,270mAh. That's almost identical to the 2,275mAh capacity of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and like its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will likely be marketed as having a 4,400mAh battery (phone makers promote what's known as the 'typical' capacity, which is bigger than the rated capacity). Doing the math Only a couple of days ago we heard rumors that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 is going to be thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 3 – a

Hear we go: the history of wireless headphones

When was the last time a tech purchase made you laugh with joy? For me it was the first time I listened to my favourite songs on a set of Apple AirPods Max headphones, which enabled me to hear things in those songs that I’d never heard before. Never mind hearing what the artist was playing: sometimes I reckon I can hear what the artist was thinking.  Wireless headphones have come an incredibly long way in a very short space of time. But their history goes back further than you might expect, and includes some incredible innovations.  1880s: the headphones that’d give you a headache  (Image credit: Twitter/Histoire & Odysee) Headphones weren’t originally designed for music. They were made for telephone operators who needed to physically connect everybody’s phone calls. The first model, unveiled in the 1880s, didn’t look much like today’s headphones either: it looked more like a phone that had been cut in half and attached to your head. And it weighed around 5kg, the eq
