Android phones could get 4 years of updates thanks to Qualcomm and Google

Android is hopefully going to see faster updates and for much longer. What you need to know Qualcomm has announced it's working with Google to expand Project Treble. The partnership aims to bring up to 4 years of updates to Android devices powered by Qualcomm chips, starting with the Snapdragon 888. It's still up to smartphone OEMs on whether or not they want to continue providing updates. The Android update process has always been a mess and was once the main pain point for users. They have admittedly gotten better over the past several years, thanks to Google's push for Project Treble, which it introduced in 2017 as part of Android 8.0 Oreo. In a nutshell, Project Treble separates Android into different parts, which is supposed to make it easier for Android OEMs to update what they need and push them out quicker. It was a bit of a slow uptake, but OEMs have managed to speed up the pace at which major updates are pushed out to devices, especially with Android 10.

The Immersive Home Platform promises Gigabit speeds in pocket-sized form factors. What you need to know Qualcomm has officially unveiled its Immersive Home line of chipsets, the 310 and 210 series. These chips are designed to bring Gigabit speeds to pocket-sized mesh Wi-Fi 6 routers. Partner brands like Xiaomi, Belkin, and TP-Link have announced that their future products will be using the new Qualcomm chipsets. Qualcomm has officially announced the Immersive Home Platform, which includes four new chipsets designed for mesh Wi-Fi systems. With a modular architecture, these chipsets bring improved Gigabit wireless speeds to different mesh router form factors, including ones "as small as the palm of the hand." The goal is to advance Wi-Fi 6 and 6E coverage while making the transition easier and more accessible than before. In other words, not only do the new chipsets promise smaller form factors, but they also allow for manufacturers to create more affordable mesh Wi-

Qualcomm-powered Chinese XR startup Nreal raises $40 million Nreal, one of the most-watched mixed reality startups in China, just secured $40 million from a group of high-profile investors in a Series B round that could potentially bring more adoption to its portable augmented glasses . Kuaishou, the archrival to TikTok’s Chinese version Douyin, led the round, marking yet another video platform to establish links with Nreal following existing investor iQiyi, China’s own Netflix. Like other major video streaming sites around the world, Kuaishou and iQiyi have dabbled in making augmented reality content, and securing a hardware partner will no doubt be instrumental to their early experiments. Other backers in the round with plentiful industry resources include GP Capital , which counts state-owned financial holding group Shanghai International Group and major Chinese movie studio Hengdian Group as investors; CCEIF Fund , set up by state-owned telecom equipment maker China Electronics
