Best car accessories: Amazon Alexa

Amazon's Alexa voice assistant is arguably behind Google and Apple in the car, but that doesn't mean there aren't some cool gadgets that can bring the Echo experience into your automobile. Here are some of our favorite Alexa devices for the car.

Firmly in charge

iOttie Easy One Touch Connect Pro

Staff Pick

This two-in-one device from iOttie will securely hold your smartphone in place and keep it in your field of vision while you're driving, but it has another trick up its sleeve. Amazon Alexa is built-in, so you can access the voice assistant from the app on your phone hands-free, with no need to touch or unlock your device while driving. You can ask Alexa to play music, answer questions, or display directions on the screen.

Out-of-the-way

Anker Roav Viva Pro

Two of my three family cars are not equipped with Android Auto or Apple Car Play, so this little device has been a lifesaver for hands-free smart assistant access. It simply plugs into the cigarette lighter/power port and enables you to interact with your phone's Roav and Alexa apps using just your voice. A nice bonus is that it has two USB-A charging ports, so you can keep your phone powered while you use it.

First-party access

Amazon Echo Auto

The Echo Auto is Amazon's first-party solution to bring Alexa functionality to any car. It has a slim profile with the iconic Echo LED light and a physical mute button. Although this image doesn't show it, it does come with an AC clip mount to keep the Echo Auto securely in place.

Keep it together

Echo Auto Air Vent Mount

If you need a replacement mount, or if you see yourself switching your Echo Auto between vehicles, it never hurts to get a spare. This clip mount has the added benefit of putting the speaker closer to your mouth and the LED closer to your line of sight.

Full-screen maps

Garmin DriveSmart 65 with Amazon Alexa

If you like the idea of having a display for turn-by-turn directions, lists, and weather, the DriveSmart 65 is the way to go. You'll get a really rick navigation experience thanks to Garmin's lengthy reputation and experience in the business.

Best car accessories: Google Assistant

If you're fortunate enough to have a car with an infotainment system, you might have access to a built-in Android Auto display. Of course, newer Android phones can serve as their own Android Auto displays as well. In addition to that excellent experience, here are some of our favorite devices to enhance the experience of using Google Assistant while driving.

Who needs acessories?

Android Auto for phone screens app

Staff Pick

The easiest way to get the Google Assistant in your car is through this app that puts an Android Auto display on your phone. Then, connect your device via Bluetooth, and you're off to the races. Just be sure to pick up a phone car mount so that you're not looking down at your device while driving.

Free at Google Play

Alexa doesn't get all the fun

Anker Roav Bolt

If you like the idea of some of the Alexa-enabled devices mentioned above, like the Anker Roav Viva, but you live in a Google Assistant world, then the Bolt is the device you need. It's even more compact than the Roav Viva while still including two USB-A charging ports.

Aftermarket infotainment

Pioneer MVH1400NEX Display

This is one of the most popular and affordable aftermarket infotainment displays. It can work with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and is the perfect conduit to Google Assistant. You can access favorite apps like YouTube Music, Pandora, Waze, and Google Maps at a tap or with your voice.

$500 at Amazon

Best car accessories: Universally compatible

These accessories will come in handy regardless of which voice assistant you prefer to use while driving.

Look ma, no wires!

MANKIW 10W Qi Wireless Charger Mount

Staff Pick

Even if you are fortunate enough to have a built-in infotainment display, you're still going to need to have your smartphone with you to access Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. So why not keep your phone handy, secure, and charged all at the same time with a Qi mount like this one?

$34 at Amazon

Top phone mount

iOttie Easy One Touch 5 Air Vent Car Mount Phone Holder

If you aren't concerned with built-in Qi wireless charging but still want your phone to be visible and secure, this car mount from iOttie is one of the best on the market.

$25 at Amazon

No slip ups

AONKEY Dashboard Pad

An alternative to phone mounts or clips is a good dashboard pad. It won't be ideal for every vehicle, but if your car has a large, relatively flat dashboard, then you can plop your phone in this, and it will prevent the device from sliding around or moving as you drive, turn, or run over potholes.

$13 at Amazon

Noise cancellation

Mpow Ground Loop Noise Isolator

This device works best with phones with headphone jacks, a dying breed, but there are still many out in the world. It works to eliminate the buzzing noise that sometimes occurs when the audio source (your phone) and the speaker use the same power source. Again, it's not for everyone, but you'll know if you need it.

Take your voice assistant on the road

Whether you prefer interacting with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, the good news is that many of the best car accessories for Alexa or Google Assistant allow you to interact with one or the other (or, in some cases, both) safely while driving.

If you don't have a fancy infotainment system, we recommend something simple like the iOttie Easy One Touch Connect Pro for interacting with Amazon Alexa. It keeps your phone visible if you need to glance at the directions, yet it provides a hands-free way to interact with the Alexa app on your device.

If you prefer Google Assistant, the Anker Roav Bolt is a good hands-free option.

Of course, there are full-on infotainment systems for older cars that don't come with them to begin with like the Pioneer MVH1400NEX Display that works with Android Auto and Google Assistant or Apple CarPlay and provides access to tons of apps.

Apple and Meta Reportedly Discussed AI Partnership for iOS 18

Apple has held discussions with Meta about integrating the Facebook owner's AI model into iOS 18 as part of its Apple Intelligence feature set, according to a report over the weekend. Meta launched Llama 2, its large language model, in July 2023, and in April, the company released the latest versions of its AI models, called Llama 3 . The Wall Street Journal reports that the two longtime rivals have held talks about offering Meta's model as an additional option to OpenAI's ChatGPT. The paywalled report notes that the discussions haven't been finalized and could fall through. As part of Apple Intelligence, Apple has announced a partnership with OpenAI that will allow Siri to access ChatGPT directly in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia to provide better responses in relevant situations. Using ChatGPT will be optional, so users with concerns about the technology can abstain and still make use of Apple's own new AI features. Speaking at WWDC 2024, Apple's

Here Are the macOS Sequoia Features Intel Macs Won't Support

When Apple released macOS Monterey in 2021, some key features required a Mac with Apple silicon. The same scenario played out with macOS Ventura in 2022, and then again the following year with the release of macOS Sonoma. With macOS Sequoia set to arrive in the fall, which new features can Intel Mac owners expect to be unavailable to them this time around? Apple says that macOS Sequoia is compatible with the same Macs as macOS Sonoma, but Apple's fine print reveals that certain new features won't work on Intel machines. If you're still on an Intel Mac, here's what you won't have access to. Apple Intelligence Apple Intelligence , a deeply integrated, personalized AI feature set for Apple devices that uses cutting-edge generative artificial intelligence to enhance the user experience, won't be available on Intel Macs. Apple says the advanced features require its M1 chip or later, so if your Mac was released before November 2020, you're out of luck. T

iPhone 16 Pro Models to Adopt 'M14' Advanced Samsung OLED Panels for Improved Brightness and Lifespan

The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the first Apple smartphones to adopt Samsung's high performance "M14" OLED display panel, claims a new report coming out of South Korea. According to ETNews , Samsung's "M" series of OLED panels are made for flagship smartphones, while "14" refers to the number of high-performance materials used to produce them. "M14" is the first series of its kind, and the panel is said to have been developed to deliver superior brightness and longevity. Samsung has reportedly placed orders for the M14 materials and is preparing to mass produce the displays in the second half of the year for Apple's iPhone 16 Pro models. Google's Pixel 9 smartphone is the only other device that is expected to adopt the high-performance displays in 2024. A previous report out of China claimed that this year's ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models will feature up to 1,200 nits of typical SDR brightness – a 20%

Apple Boosts A18 Chip Orders in Anticipation of High iPhone 16 Demand

Apple is said to have upped its order of next-generation chips from TSMC to between 90 million and 100 million units, following heightened demand expectations for its iPhone 16 series. Last year's initial chip order volume for the iPhone 15 series launch is believed to have been in the region of 80-90 million units, suggesting Apple is anticipating higher demand for its 2024 devices, according to Taiwanese outlet CTEE . The arrival of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18 is expected to boost initial sales of the devices. One of the reasons is that Apple Intelligence requires at least an iPhone 15 Pro to run, which means owners of last year's iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will miss out on Apple's new AI features unless they upgrade to an iPhone 15 Pro or plump for one of the iPhone 16 models. Last year, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus were equipped with the A16 Bionic chip – the same chip that was in the iPhone 14 Pro models – whereas the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max f
