Here's all the machines in Horizon Forbidden West (that we know of so far)

New areas to explore and new machines to discover.

One of the biggest, most beautiful games revealed during Sony's PS5 showcase The Future of Gaming was Horizon Forbidden West. This ambitious sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn is being developed by Guerrilla Games, which uses the Decima engine and the newfound power of the PS5 to great lengths. It will undoubtedly become one of the best PS5 games when it releases.

The world of Horizon Forbidden West is one of mystery, and one of the highlights is the different machines that roam, fly, or swim through the world. As Aloy travels into what was the Western U.S., she's going to discover plentiful machines, both new and returning forms. Here's the complete list of machines in Horizon Forbidden West that we know so far.

Machine classes

In the original Horizon Zero Dawn game, machines were separated into four classes. However, players couldn't see what classes they were sorted into. We assume these same categories (and maybe more) will exist in Horizon Forbidden West. They are as follows:

  • Acquisition Class: This describes machines designed to harvest resources. They're shaped like herbivores in the original game and have blaze canisters.
  • Recon Class: Recon or Reconnaissance machines are the ones that act as sentinels and look out for threats. For example, Watchers from the first game.
  • Combat Class: These machines are specifically designed to attack threats and typically have the form of predatory animals. Think Sawtooths or Stalkers from the original game.
  • Communication Class: A special class, solely consisting of a lone machine that enables communication between the other types.
  • Transport Class: Machines designed to carry cargo or canisters around the world. For example, Shell-Walkers from the original game.

Bristlebacks

The first new type of machine introduced, Bristlebacks, are powerful Acquisition Class machines that look like warthogs, especially with dangerous tusks. We first saw a couple of Bristlebacks in the announcement trailer for Horizon Forbidden West, being overridden by a mysterious hostile tribe that uses machines for war. They bear a strong resemblance to Behemoths, machines introduced in Horizon Zero Dawn with anti-gravity capabilities.

Burrowers

Burrowers are a new kind of Recon class machine in the Forbidden West. They can emit a high-pitch noise that alerts other machines while simultaneously stunning enemies. They're capable of swimming and, as their name suggests, can burrow underground to reappear at a new location.

Clamberjaws

More machines resembling monkeys called Clamberjaws were also seen during the trailer at The Game Awards 2021.

Clawstriders

Another new type of machine life, Clawstriders, look like robot Velociraptors. They travel in packs and appear to have powerful, chainsaw-like jaws. Their name was revealed via some comics. Their machine class is not confirmed yet, though we suspect Recon Class or Combat Class. Clawstriders are some of the new machines that Aloy can override and ride.

Chargers

One of the machines returning from the last game, Chargers, are a smaller type of Acquisition Class machine. They're usually found in open grassy plains and rocky areas, traveling in herds. Aloy could override them in Horizon Zero Dawn and, alongside the Broadhead or Strider, could ride them. One Charger is seen in the trailer for Horizon Forbidden West, being used as a mount by Aloy.

Rollerbacks

Another new machine, Rollerbacks, are vaguely armadillo-esque machines that gather armor to themselves and, appropriately enough, roll over their enemies, crushing them under heavy metal.

Shellsnappers

Shellsnappers are turtle-like creatures that guard shores and swamps and are the second-ever amphibious machine we've seen. They appear to rest dormant for large amounts of time, allowing vegetation to grow in the mud that collects on their backs. It's hard to say what class they belong to, but we'll update when we learn more.

Snapmaws

Returning in force, the crocodile-esque Snapmaws are Acquisition Class machines. Truly in their element along the coasts and waterways of the Pacific, the Snapmaw is the only known amphibious machine beside the Shellsnapper and Tideripper. Some Snapmaws even guard hidden underwater locations.

Sunwings

The Sunwings are a new flying type that patrol the skies of the Forbidden West, traveling alone or in small groups. They bear a strong resemblance to pterosaurs. They use the solar panels in their wings to gather and store energy, enabling them to undergo long flights. They are likely Recon Class machines.

Tallnecks

Another machine returning from the first game, Tallnecks, are rather special, being the lone machine that belongs to the Communications Class. Striding on a loop through their particular area, Tallnecks enable communication between other machines. Whenever Aloy overrides a Tallneck, she gets a map of the area.

Tiderippers

The Tideripper is a massive Plesiosaur-esque machine that inhabits the underwater portions of the Forbidden West. It's an Acquisition Class machine that uses filters to sort through sediment for resources. Guerrilla notes that it can deliver powerful attacks on land or underwater. It's also the third type of aquatic machine to be introduced.

Previously, before the May 2021 State of Play officially started, we caught glimpses of a new machine swimming in the ocean on the left side of the screen. It was too far away to get a lot of details, but it seemed to have a long neck in an almost Nessie-like shape. Now, it appears this machine was the Tideripper.

Tremortusks

Another new machine, the Tremortusk, is a massive, mammoth-like creature described as dangerous if discovered in the wild. However, when decked out for warfare by a human tribe like the Tenakth, it becomes a huge threat. Tremortusks were explicitly designed as combat machines to keep humans from overrunning the ecosystem. This fearsome machine is packed to the brim with various weaponry, including a flamethrower in its trunk.

Slitherfangs

Slitherfangs are machines that resemble gigantic cobras. Slitherfangs appear to exist only for combat and can spit acid, similar to how some snakes spit venom. These machines were first spotted during a trailer at The Game Awards 2021.

A growing list

According to Guerrilla Games game director Mathijs de Jonge, there are "dozens of new machines" in addition to different returning types. Each machine needs to be overridden to study and analyze its weaknesses, so there will be plenty to find.

All of the machines in Horizon Forbidden West are designed to have extended options and are, in general, a bigger threat than in the previous game. Aloy also has more options for dealing with these threats though, with new audio cues that relay particular attacks or danger to the player, per Guerrilla Games via PlayStation Blog. These come through especially strong for players using 3D audio with the best PS5 headsets.

We'll continue updating this list as it grows and new machines are revealed. Guerrilla Games aims to release Horizon Forbidden West on Feb. 18, 2022, exclusively for the PS4 and PS5. Horizon Forbidden West is up for preorder with several editions to choose from.

The world of Horizon is continuing to grow, with an upcoming PlayStation VR2 game titled Horizon Call of the Mountain that could even further expand the list of known machines.

Apple and Meta Reportedly Discussed AI Partnership for iOS 18

Apple has held discussions with Meta about integrating the Facebook owner's AI model into iOS 18 as part of its Apple Intelligence feature set, according to a report over the weekend. Meta launched Llama 2, its large language model, in July 2023, and in April, the company released the latest versions of its AI models, called Llama 3 . The Wall Street Journal reports that the two longtime rivals have held talks about offering Meta's model as an additional option to OpenAI's ChatGPT. The paywalled report notes that the discussions haven't been finalized and could fall through. As part of Apple Intelligence, Apple has announced a partnership with OpenAI that will allow Siri to access ChatGPT directly in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia to provide better responses in relevant situations. Using ChatGPT will be optional, so users with concerns about the technology can abstain and still make use of Apple's own new AI features. Speaking at WWDC 2024, Apple's

Here Are the macOS Sequoia Features Intel Macs Won't Support

When Apple released macOS Monterey in 2021, some key features required a Mac with Apple silicon. The same scenario played out with macOS Ventura in 2022, and then again the following year with the release of macOS Sonoma. With macOS Sequoia set to arrive in the fall, which new features can Intel Mac owners expect to be unavailable to them this time around? Apple says that macOS Sequoia is compatible with the same Macs as macOS Sonoma, but Apple's fine print reveals that certain new features won't work on Intel machines. If you're still on an Intel Mac, here's what you won't have access to. Apple Intelligence Apple Intelligence , a deeply integrated, personalized AI feature set for Apple devices that uses cutting-edge generative artificial intelligence to enhance the user experience, won't be available on Intel Macs. Apple says the advanced features require its M1 chip or later, so if your Mac was released before November 2020, you're out of luck. T

iPhone 16 Pro Models to Adopt 'M14' Advanced Samsung OLED Panels for Improved Brightness and Lifespan

The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the first Apple smartphones to adopt Samsung's high performance "M14" OLED display panel, claims a new report coming out of South Korea. According to ETNews , Samsung's "M" series of OLED panels are made for flagship smartphones, while "14" refers to the number of high-performance materials used to produce them. "M14" is the first series of its kind, and the panel is said to have been developed to deliver superior brightness and longevity. Samsung has reportedly placed orders for the M14 materials and is preparing to mass produce the displays in the second half of the year for Apple's iPhone 16 Pro models. Google's Pixel 9 smartphone is the only other device that is expected to adopt the high-performance displays in 2024. A previous report out of China claimed that this year's ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models will feature up to 1,200 nits of typical SDR brightness – a 20%

Apple Boosts A18 Chip Orders in Anticipation of High iPhone 16 Demand

Apple is said to have upped its order of next-generation chips from TSMC to between 90 million and 100 million units, following heightened demand expectations for its iPhone 16 series. Last year's initial chip order volume for the iPhone 15 series launch is believed to have been in the region of 80-90 million units, suggesting Apple is anticipating higher demand for its 2024 devices, according to Taiwanese outlet CTEE . The arrival of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18 is expected to boost initial sales of the devices. One of the reasons is that Apple Intelligence requires at least an iPhone 15 Pro to run, which means owners of last year's iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will miss out on Apple's new AI features unless they upgrade to an iPhone 15 Pro or plump for one of the iPhone 16 models. Last year, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus were equipped with the A16 Bionic chip – the same chip that was in the iPhone 14 Pro models – whereas the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max f
