'EVE Online' and Microsoft Excel pair up for the year's hottest collab

EVE Online has often been derided as a "spreadsheet simulator." Many dedicated players use spreadsheets to keep track of data like profit margins and to calculate fleet damage output at certain ranges. Developer CCP Games is now leaning into the spreadsheet lifestyle even more with official Microsoft Excel support. The studio revealed at EVE Fanfest that it reached out to Microsoft and the pair are now building an extension that will pull data from the long-running MMO into an Excel spreadsheet. The news went over well with the crowd: CCP showed an early prototype of the tool in action and said more details would be revealed later this year. This arguably isn't the first time the studio has embraced spreadsheets. EVE Online has a UI-only mode that ditches 3D space battle graphics for pure data with a spreadsheet-style view. Sure, other details about the future of EVE Online were announced at Fanfest,

Microsoft and Google join Facebook’s legal fight against infamous spyware vendor

Image by Alex Castro / The Verge A group of high profile tech companies including Microsoft, Google, Cisco, and VMWare have filed an amicus brief in support of Facebook’s legal action against NSO Group, Microsoft has announced. Facebook-owned WhatsApp sued the spyware vendor last year, alleging that its software was used to hack 1,400 devices via a vulnerability in the messaging service. Other companies listed on the filing include the Internet Association, and Microsoft subsidiaries GitHub and LinkedIn. In response to Facebook’s lawsuit last year, NSO Group has argued it should benefit from “sovereign immunity,” *Reuters* reports, because it sells its tools to foreign governments. However, in July a judge denied its request to dismiss the lawsuit. Now NSO Group is appealing to overturn the ruling, and it’s this appeal attempt that Microsoft and others are pushing back against. “Private companies should remain subject to liability” In a blog post titled “Cyber Mercenaries Don’

'Flight Simulator' developers explain its 'shared world' multiplayer

Last year we got some hands-on time with a pre-alpha build of the next Flight Simulator game in Microsoft's long-running series. While that gave a peek at the game's photorealistic environment and inclusion of information like piped-in live flight traffic and weather data, Windows Central points out a seven-minute video the developers just posted that goes into the game's multiplayer features. The main mode is a shared world where everyone playing Flight Simulator can potentially see everyone else, relying on Azure servers to provide enough capacity. That includes people flying in the real world, with "most" air traffic accounted for, along with AI that will take over if information from the real plane is lost for a moment. To play in that mode you'll have to turn on real-time weather as it's happening, however the real-time air traffic can be turned on or off. If you don't want to use the default settings and rules, then turning to "all p

Report claims morale at Microsoft's Mixer is at an all-time low

Let's hope Mixer recovers. What you need to know Mixer is Microsoft's livestreaming platform to compete with Amazon's Twitch. According to a report by OnMSFT, employee morale is at an all-time low. The service is run by a skeleton team now. It's unclear if this report is completely accurate, but Mixer definitely has an uphill climb. Today, a report from OnMSFT said that employee morale at Microsoft's livestreaming platform, Mixer, was at an all-time low. Employees are concerned about the future of the service and there are layoffs taking place there. You can read an excerpt that illuminates the situation below. There is also a video that shows a manager being rather disrespectful to employees. Mixer has had a rough few months that involved the original founders leaving the business alongside a general manager and corporate vice president. However, what hasn't been reported is that over the last six months, there have been sixteen layoffs due

Google wants to use Chrome to suck you into virtual reality

Google says it's now time to marry two computing realms: the web and virtual reality. Its latest version of the Chrome browser includes a technology called WebVR, which lets programmers create websites that present the computer-generated 3D worlds of virtual reality. If you're into VR, you might appreciate the promise WebVR holds for expanding what you can do with a device like a Google Daydream View or a Facebook Oculus Rift VR headset . That's because, in principle at least, WebVR makes it easier for developers to create a single VR experience that'll work across many VR headsets instead of having to create a separate version for each device. It's an extension of how a single website can span your laptop, Android phone or iPad tablet.

How to install Windows 10 Technical Preview Now

Prior to installation There are a couple of caveats to keep in mind before doing anything: Backup your data first! Not that you had no excuse not anyway, but make sure to back up your data before upgrading if you have something that can not be recovered. Or even if it does not. Just do a backup. You will not be able to use the recovery partition to downgrade. If you have a recovery partition on the system, which will no longer be able to restore your computer to the Windows version you had before. Recovery will support external Rollback. As is expected, since it has a recovery partition, you need a floppy or USB with Windows 8 (or more) on it to go back to how things were, if you do not like or can not use Windows 10. Microsoft As mentioned several times, this is a pre-release software and is expected to be very buggy and crash-prone probably. It is not recommended that you install this on your computer at work or anything that needs daily use. We will show you how t

AOL has declined to comment for this story, and we are still waiting to hear back from Microsoft with a response. From what we understand, the deal is not yet finalized, with AOL and Microsoft still working out the price. It could also be very wishful thinking from those intent on trying to save both services. AOL did not give any guidance yesterday on what would happen with Shoutcast. If this is correct, it would represent an interesting, and strange, twist
