Samsung to Rival Apple Silicon by Developing Custom PC and Mobile Processors

Samsung plans to rival Apple silicon by developing its own custom processors for future smartphones and personal computers in an effort to develop more advanced chips. According to Business Korea , Samsung has already formed an internal team dedicated to CPU core development and has recruited Rahul Tuli, a former AMD developer, to lead the group. Samsung has traditionally relied on British chip company Arm for its Exynos advanced processors, but developing the chips in-house would allow it to take full control of the design and optimization process, similar to Apple's transition away from Intel. The first application processor (AP) is said to be dubbed Galaxy Chip, and could be available in 2025. However, this chip will likely have a CPU based on Arm technology, since Samsung has only just initiated development of its own CPU core. "Samsung Electronics will be able to boost completion level of its Galaxy Chip if it successfully develops a CPU core," Korean outlet

Gurman: New 13-Inch and 15-Inch MacBook Airs Likely to Launch by Summer

Apple will likely launch both an updated 13-inch MacBook Air and a larger 15-inch MacBook Air "between late spring and summer," according to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman . However, he said the chips these models will use is a "big remaining question." Gurman said it is "plausible" that at least the next 13-inch MacBook Air will be equipped with the as-yet-unannounced M3 chip, which will reportedly be manufactured based on TSMC's latest 3nm process for improved performance. The current 13-inch model was released in July 2022 and is powered by the M2 chip, which is based on a 5nm process. Gurman did not reveal if the 15-inch MacBook Air will also be equipped with the M3 chip. He said a 15-inch model with an M2 chip "may still excite consumers," but would "quickly become outdated" given the M3 chip is on the horizon. Last month, Taiwanese supply chain publication DigiTimes claimed the 15-inch MacBook Air will be equipped with th

New iMac Reportedly in Advanced Stage of Development

Apple's next iMac has reached an "advanced stage of development," according to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman . In his newsletter today, Gurman said the new iMac will have the same 24-inch display size and color options as the current model. The new iMac will likely include Apple's upcoming M3 chip, internal design changes, and a new manufacturing process for the stand, according to Gurman. The M3 chip will reportedly be manufactured based on Apple chipmaking partner TSMC's latest 3nm process for additional performance and power efficiency improvements. Apple last updated the iMac in April 2021 with the M1 chip and an ultra-thin enclosure available in seven colors, including green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. It is currently the only iMac in Apple's lineup, as the Intel-based 27-inch iMac and iMac Pro were both discontinued within the past two years. Gurman previously claimed that a larger iMac could return , but he did not share any n

Apple Card's Savings Account Feature Nears Launch

Goldman Sachs this week updated its Apple Card Customer Agreement to provide additional clarity about the upcoming Daily Cash savings account feature. The changes in the agreement are minor, but suggest that the feature's launch is approaching. Apple first announced the savings account option in October and said it would be available "in the coming months," but the company has not commented on the plans since. The feature will allow Apple Card users to open a high-yield savings account from Apple's financial partner Goldman Sachs and earn interest on the Daily Cash deposited, with no fees, no minimum deposits, and no minimum balance requirements. Like the Apple Card, the savings account will be managed through the Wallet app on the iPhone. Apple has yet to reveal what the account's APY will be, but Goldman Sachs' existing Marcus savings account currently starts at 3.75%. The savings account was initially listed in the release notes for the iOS 16.1 Re

iPhone 15 Pro Could Feature Solid-State Unified Volume Rocker, Mute Button Instead of Switch

Multiple rumors have indicated that a handful of design changes are coming to the iPhone 15 Pro and ‌‌iPhone 15 Pro‌‌ Max, but one that until now has gone under the radar is the possibility that the volume controls on the side of the device will be a single unified rocker button. As noted by YouTuber ZoneOfTech on Twitter , Apple typically uses two pins to attach each button to the chassis, but in the latest renders based on leaked ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ CAD drawings, only two pins are shown in a single indentation where the volume buttons usually sit. In contrast, CAD-based renders of the regular iPhone 15 show two separate slots with four pins in total. In the course of making their own ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ concept based on the leaked CADs, ZoneOfTech has become "100% sure" the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ will feature one long unified volume button rather than two separate ones. In addition, ZoneOfTech is just as certain that "the mute switch will also switch to a singular press butto

Apple Seemingly Restricting Generative AI Apps to 17+ or Older App Store Rating

Apple has refused to accept an update to email app BlueMail that adds generative AI features based on ChatGPT unless the developer gives it a 17+ age restriction, the Wall Street Journal reports. The update to BlueMail uses OpenAI's latest ChatGPT chatbot API to help write emails using content from previous emails and calendar events. In communications sent to BlueMail developer Blix Inc., Apple's App Store review team expressed concerns that AI-powered language tools could generate inappropriate content for children, requesting that the app increases its age restriction to age 17 or older, or include content filtering. BlueMail's current age restriction is age four or older. The developer insists that the app already has content filtering and that placing a substantially higher age restriction could stop it from attracting new potential users. Normally, 17 or older age restrictions on the ‌App Store‌ include apps with offensive language, sexual content, or reference

iPhone 15 Pro's Next-Gen Chip Capabilities Expected to Spark Upgrade Demand Among Current iPhone Owners

Apple's upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models may spark a "replacement demand" among owners of older iPhones, due to the significant improvements enabled by the A17 processor, Apple's first iPhone chip based on TSMC's first-generation 3-nanometer process. That's according to suppliers involved in Apple's iPhone supply chain. Quoting from the latest DigiTimes industry report: TSMC's N3E (3nm enhanced) technology will enable significant specification upgrades in the upcoming iPhone series, the sources said. Suppliers involved in the iPhone supply chain anticipate replacement demand for the 2023 models. As we've been hearing lately , Apple is widely expected to adopt TSMC's 3nm technology this year for the A17 Bionic chip that is likely to power the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models. The first-gen 3nm process (also known as N3) is said to deliver a 35% power efficiency improvement over TSMC's 5nm-based N4 fabrication process, which wa

Apple to Spend 1 Billion Euros on Munich Silicon Design Center Expansion

Apple has announced an additional 1 billion euros investment in German engineering over the next six years as part of its Silicon Design Center expansion in central Munich. Apple says the investment will go towards the design and construction of a "state-of-the-art research facility" at Seidlstrasse, where Apple's R&D teams can "come together in new ways, enhancing collaboration and innovation." "Our R&D teams in Munich are critical to our efforts to develop products delivering greater performance, efficiency, and power savings," said Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. "The expansion of our European Silicon Design Center will enable an even closer collaboration between our more than 2,000 engineers in Bavaria working on breakthrough innovations, including custom silicon designs, power management chips, and future wireless technologies." In addition to Apple's new Seidlstrasse facility,

Apple Executive Hints at Apple Silicon Mac Pro and Ongoing Focus on Apple Watch Battery Life

Apple Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Bob Borchers has alluded to the upcoming Apple silicon Mac Pro and the company's focus on the Apple Watch's battery life in a new interview with India Today . When asked if Apple still intends to pursue its announced plan to transition all Macs to Apple silicon, Borchers reaffirmed Apple's "clear goal to transition fully" to its own chips, seemingly hinting that the Apple silicon ‌Mac Pro‌ is still in the pipeline. We believe strongly that Apple silicon can power and transform experiences from the MacBook Air to all the way up to the Mac Studio. We've been very clear from the beginning that our goal is to take our entire product line to Apple Silicon. And that's something we intend to do. Amid discussion about how Apple motivated the wider computing industry to refocus on efficiency over performance, Borchers seemed to concede that the Apple Watch is a device that would benefit greatly from better

Telegram App for Mac Gains New Power Saving Mode

Telegram Messenger this week released an update for its Mac app that adds a new Power Saving menu of options to help users save battery life when accessing the encrypted chat platform on their MacBooks. Found in the app's settings, Power Saving Mode can be turned on with the toggle of a switch, and when enabled, the feature instantly disables a series of resource-intensive processes. According to Telegram, the feature turns off things like autoplay GIFs and videos, sticker and emoji animations and effects, and interface animations that normally work in the app. There's also a slider option that allows users to have Power Saving Mode turn on automatically based on the battery level percentage of their Mac. In addition, the new Power Saving menu has a separate series of switches to turn off resource-hungry processes individually, offering a way for users to target only the worst offenders. The feature comes with version 9.4.1 of the Telegram Mac app , which also includes

Twitter Down, Many Users Unable to Access Timelines

Social network Twitter is experiencing an outage at the current time, with most users unable to refresh or in some cases even load their timeline feeds. Neither Twitter's website nor the Twitter iPhone app are working properly. Sending a tweet works in the app, but in many cases only the author can see their tweet given that timelines are out of action. Twitter Search is also non-functional. There are thousands of reports about the outage on the Down Detector website . It is not clear what is causing the outage, but Twitter conducted its fourth round of layoffs over the weekend, cutting 10% of its remaining workforce. The layoffs reportedly hit several departments, including ads and infrastructure engineering, leaving the company with fewer than 2,000 employees. It had about 7,500 when Musk took over. GravaStar Debuts New Robotic 65W GaN Charger

GravaStar is known for its range of quirky speakers with video game-esque designs, but the company is branching into power adapters and today announced the launch of the Alpha65 GaN charger . Rather than looking like your standard power brick, the Alpha65 was modeled after robots from classic science fiction movies, and it has a distinctly robotic look. We were able to test out the charger ahead of its launch, and it's a fun desktop charging accessory for those who like a little whimsy. The charger is about the size of a standard GaN 65W charger, but it has a power plug on the bottom, two movable, collapsible legs, and removable antennae. There are two eyes that light up when it's plugged in, and the prongs fold down so when it's not in use for charging purposes, it looks like a desktop decoration. When plugged in, the eyes are red, so they have a double purpose as a charging indicator. A clever design keeps the legs at the bottom, so even though there are appendag

Reddit App Now Lets You Search Comments on Posts Directly From the Search Bar

Reddit's official app now provides users with the ability to search for comments within a specific post directly from the search bar. After updating to version 2023.08.0 of the iOS app, when viewing a post, users can now search within the comments of that post, rather than all of Reddit. The developers describe it like so : We've been listening to your feedback and you can now search comments within a post on desktop, iOS, and Android apps. So what does this mean? You don't have to "cmd-f" on the post page anymore and you can search comment threads without expanding them. No more long scrolling sessions — quickly get to the parts of the conversation you're looking for and jump in where you want. Reddit says the feature is now available on desktop, iOS, and Android. The tool builds upon the ability to get search results from replies to original posts, which Reddit introduced in April last year . In addition, Reddit says it has improved its subreddit se

iPhone 16 Pro Still on Track to Feature Under-Display Face ID, Followed By Under-Display Selfie Camera in 2026

Apple is still on track to switch to under-display Face ID technology next year that will provide more usable display area on iPhone 16 Pro models, claims a new report out of Korea. Apple is set to transition to under-screen ‌Face ID‌ on ‌iPhone‌ 16 Pro models in 2024, followed by under-screen ‌Face ID‌ and an under-screen front camera on ‌iPhone‌ 18 Pro models in 2026, according to respected display industry consultant Ross Young . In line with this roadmap, according to a new report from The Elec , Apple should not have any major difficulties securing the technology necessary for external light to be able to penetrate the display and enter the TrueDepth camera system that makes ‌Face ID‌ possible, given the current state of smartphone production processes. From the display point of view, Underpanel Face ID has the same principle as the underpanel camera (UPC) that Samsung Display is applying to Samsung Electronics' foldable phone Galaxy Z Fold series. UPC also mounts a fr

iPhone 15's Dynamic Island Poses Production Difficulties for One Apple Supplier

Apple is expected to expand the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone 15 models released this year, but the integrated feature is making it difficult for one of Apple's Chinese suppliers to produce the devices en masse, claims a new report. According to Korean-language website The Elec , China's BOE is having problems with light leakage around the portion of the OLED display where the pill and hole cutouts secure the space necessary for the TrueDepth camera and Face ID. The issues are said to be limited to a low-end 6.1-inch iPhone 15 model that BOE has been involved in manufacturing. The report implies that Samsung and LG Display – set to mass produce the "Pro" 6.1-inch model and the two larger "Plus" and "Pro Max" 6.7-inch models – have not experienced similar problems. Apple apparently requested that its iPhone 15 OLED suppliers use something called Edge Light Blocking (ELB), a device to prevent light leakage around the camera lens, among oth

Kuo: New iPhone SE With 6.1-Inch OLED Display and Apple's 5G Chip Planned

Apple has restarted development of a fourth-generation iPhone SE with a 6.1-inch OLED display and an Apple-designed 5G chip , according to the latest information shared by reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo . This reversal comes nearly two months after Kuo said Apple had abandoned its plans to release a new iPhone SE in 2024 . In a series of tweets today, Kuo said the new iPhone SE will be similar to the standard iPhone 14, which features a 6.1-inch OLED display with thinner bezels. The current iPhone SE is equipped with a 4.7-inch LCD display with thicker bezels. The new iPhone SE will be equipped with Apple's custom-designed 5G modem, with connectivity limited to sub-6GHz bands of 5G, the analyst said. The current iPhone SE already supports 5G, but uses Qualcomm's custom Snapdragon X57 chip. Kuo did not indicate when the new iPhone SE would be released, but it likely won't be available until March 2024 or later based on when previous models of the device launche
