What is a teraflop (TFLOP), and what does it mean for the Xbox Series X?

The Xbox Series X has 12 teraflops of GPU performance. Here's what that means. Microsoft confirmed earlier this week that the Xbox Series X has 12 teraflops of GPU performance, double that of the Xbox One X and eight times the amount of the standard Xbox One. You would've seen teraflops mentioned every time there's a new console announcement, but what is it, and why does it matter for gaming? Let's find out. What is a teraflop? A FLOP is an acronym for floating point operations per second. Floating point operations include irrational numbers and decimal points, and they're much more complex than fixed point operations, which are limited to binary integers. Because of the inherent difficulty of floating point operations, they're used to measure the compute power of a particular system. Without getting into the weeds, a teraflop (TFLOP) means the ability to process one trillion floating point operations per second. So when Microsoft says that the Xbox S

PS4 games will soon be available on iPhone and Android smartphones

I’m old enough to remember the first Sony Playstation, and truthfully, I freak out a bit when people tell me their first console was the PS2 or PS3.  Those people actually consider the PS1 “retro”, which means I’m just old. But those people also missed out on some truly incredible Sony games (for that day and age, anyway).  Those games included the PS1 versions Gran Turismo 2, Tekken 3, Metal Gear Solid, and more. Of course those gamers who can list the PS2 and PS3 and their first console are quickly aging too. After all, it’s entirely likely that most people in today’s generation will have their first video game experience on a smartphone. Perhaps that’s why it’s so cool to hear the news that Sony has created a gaming division specifically designed to bring its Playstation titles to iOS and Android.  Generation Smartphone will soon be able to experience the “retro” games many of us reading this grew up with. Here’s everything you need to know.

A “lightweight Xbox One” less powerful may be coming in 2016

photo by  technobuffalo hardware revisions have to an expected part of the console life cycles for decades, but usually they are hardware updates meant that kick up sales and reduce costs of production. Now an Xbox One Hardware Revision is rumored to be on the way, but it does not sound like quite the same thing. According to Microsoft blogger Brad Sams the Petri, rumors of a "lightweight Xbox One" were taking in recent months. If he says easy, he does not speak of an elegant, optimized version like the Xbox 360s Slim edition, but it is slightly less powerful - get your jokes about the current Xbox one's Power ready for the "Comments" section - and less expensive. The system, he says, is "a lightweight Xbox One, perhaps the only for Windows save games and compete with Apple TV." Similar rumors were floating around during the start window for the Xbox One a few years back, but obviously were scrapped. My guess is that if something like this w

NVIDIA's new shield tablet is like the old, but cheaper

NVIDIA shield tablet  NVIDIA's first shield tablet was a device that almost everything right:  the 8-inch slate had a sharp display is flanked by two speakers, a surprisingly precise integrated stylus and a powerful 192-core Kepler K1 processor. At the time it was simply the best games Android device on the market, and a pretty darn good Media Tablet start - but NVIDIA quietly put the shielding on the pasture earlier this year. The company is preparing for the start of a new, more powerful shield tablet? No: it is that of the same slate back on the market, albeit with a reduced, $199 price and less fuss. At a glance the new NVIDIA shield tablet K1 is a dead ringer for its $299 predecessor with almost identical chassis with the same ports, buttons and layout camera. There were a few improvements: NVIDIA replaces the shiny black font on the shield logo with brushed metal sign and the new tablet speakers are with rubberized grip surface. In fact, the only difference between th

The film, directed by Ashley Rodholm, shows how virtual reality allows Keane, his characters to bring to life at last. "If you draw, print them out, something real, visceral," he says short
